IIED , an international policy research institute and non governmental
body working for more sustainable and equitable global development.
They work globally through a wide range of long-standing relationships
with partners across the developing world. Some of these relationships
go back since our beginning in 1971. Our partnerships generate close
working relations with many key development actors from smallholder
farmers and big city slum-dwellers to national governments and regional
NGOs, global institutions and international processes. This well
established practice of working in partnership is what we believe makes
us fundamentally different from other research institutes.
IIED acts as a catalyst, broker and facilitator and helps vulnerable
groups find their voice and ensure their interests are heard in
decision-making. Environmental sustainability is a core concern but not
at the expense of people’s livelihoods.

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is Britain's national
school of public health and a leading postgraduate institution in Europe
for public health and tropical medicine. Part of the University of
London, the London School is an internationally recognized centre of
excellence in public health, international health and tropical medicine
with a remarkable depth and breadth of expertise. It is one of the
highest-rated research institutions in the UK.
Its environment is a rich
multicultural one: every year over 800 students come to the School from
120 countries. Staff are drawn from 37 nationalities.
Since coming here as Director in
2001, I have been impressed by the energy and commitment of the School
and its staff. We collaborate in research with over 115 countries
throughout the world, utilizing our critical mass of multidisciplinary
expertise which includes clinicians, epidemiologists, statisticians,
social scientists, molecular biologists and immunologists.
The School's focus on the health
of populations as a framework for our research and teaching will
continue to bring us new opportunities in the UK, in Europe and abroad.

SEI is an independent, international research institute specializing in
sustainable development and environment issues. It works at local,
national, regional and global policy levels. The SEI research programmes
aim to clarify the requirements, strategies and policies for a
transition to sustainability. These goals are linked to the principles
advocated in Agenda 21 and the Conventions such as Climate Change, Ozone
Layer Protection and Biological Diversity. SEI along with its
predecessor, the Beijer Institute, have been engaged in major
environment and development issues for a quarter of a century. It seeks
to be a leader in the creation of a new field of sustainability science
aimed at understanding the fundamental character of interaction between
nature and society, and to contribute to the capacities of different
societies to build transitions to more sustainable futures. The mission
of this institute is to support decision-making and induce change
towards sustainable development around the world by providing
integrative knowledge that bridges science and policy in the field of
environment and development.

PIK founded in 1992 and now has a staff of about 150 people. The historic
buildings of the Institute as well as the high-performance computer are
located on Potsdam’s Telegraphenberg campus.
At PIK researchers in the natural and social sciences work together to
study global change and its impacts on ecological, economic and social
systems. They examine the Earth system's capacity for withstanding human
interventions and devise strategies for a sustainable development of
humankind and nature.
PIK research projects are interdisciplinary and undertaken by scientists
from the following five departments: Integrated Systems Analysis,
Climate System, Natural Systems, Social Systems and Data & Computation.
Through data analysis, computer simulations and models, PIK provides
decision makers with sound information and tools for sustainable
development. In addition to publishing results in scientific journals
the Institute gives advice to national and regional authorities and,
increasingly, to global organisations such as the World Bank.
